Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders

INTRODUCTION T he eosinophilic gastroenteropathies are an interesting, yet somewhat poorly defined set of disorders that by definition include the infiltration of at least one layer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with eosinophils. First reported over 50 years ago, the clinical spectrum of these disorders was defined solely by various case reports. As these reports became more frequent, vari...

Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders Pathology

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are characterized pathologically by excess eosinophils in mucosal biopsies of one or multiple sites in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, simultaneously or sequentially. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is the best characterized EGID, and in most patients it is an abnormal immune-mediated response to food antigens. Current recommendations for diagnosis...

Allergy and eosinophilia in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are not equivalent. GI eosinophilia is associated with infections (parasites), nutritional deficiencies, inflammatory processes, neoplasias, and systemic disorders. However, in addition to eosinophilia, other histologic changes usually accompany the increased number of eosinophils in most of these conditions. In contrast, there is a gr...

Treatment adherence in pediatric eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders.

OBJECTIVE Examine treatment adherence rates in pediatric eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID). METHODS Participants were children aged 2.5-18 years with eosinophilic esophagitis or eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) and their caregivers. A multimethod, multi-informant assessment including parent report and electronic monitoring was utilized, with a 90% cut point for nonadherence. ...

Elements Involved In Promoting Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are food allergen-induced allergic gastrointestinal disorders, characterized by accumulation of highly induced eosinophils in different segments of gastrointestinal tract along with eosinophil microabssess and extracellular eosinophilic granules in the epithelial layer. EGID are both IgE- and cell-mediated group of diseases that include eosinophili...
